This airline is giving away free gift cards to 100K people. To get one, you have to perform a random act of kindness

Between long lines at security checkpoints, coats and mittens stuffing already-cramped seats, and stressful weather delays, traveling for the holidays is often an arduous journey.

So, Delta Airlines is rewarding the people who go out of their way to make it a little easier.

This holiday season, Delta will be celebrating 100 years of service, and in accordance with the big milestone, will also be recognizing 100,000 acts of kindness among Delta employees and customers.

The initiative is called Centennial Cheer.

Here’s how it works: Now through January 5, Delta employees will distribute Holiday Medallion cards to customers who demonstrate acts of kindness on their journey. Maybe it’s letting someone off ahead of you on the plane so they can make a connecting flight, helping a stranger with their luggage, or sharing a snack with a new friend.

“While holiday travel brings its own share of pressure, Delta is shifting the spotlight to the simple acts of humanity that make our journeys memorable,” a press release from the airline stated.

The Holiday Medallion cards are not connected to a person’s loyalty status or flight activity, but rather are reserved for “customers who truly embody the holiday spirit.”

“Gifting Holiday Medallion cards to reward acts of kindness creates a positive loop of gratitude between our customers and employees,” said Erik Snell, Delta’s chief customer experience officer.

“Whether it’s helping a seatmate with their bag, sharing a phone charger, or simply thanking a reservations specialist, those gestures create the kind of connection that makes travel feel special. That’s what Centennial Cheer is all about, recognizing and celebrating the kindness we see every day.”

But what do those Medallion cards get you? According to Delta, they can be redeemed for a “surprise gift” on the Delta Shop. Prizes include merchandise celebrating the airline’s 100-year anniversary, as well as a limited amount of “Centennial Gift Sets,” which feature commemorative trading cards and a $500 Delta gift card.

In addition to the customer-powered side of this initiative, those part of Delta’s “Medallion Members” rewards program are also able to give employees a holiday-edition certificate to commemorate a job well done. About 40,000 certificates will be awarded to recognize employees who go the extra mile, the airline stated.

“Delta people take pride in creating moments of care, and this season they’re excited to recognize that same spirit in others,” Snell said.

“As our 100th year comes to a close, we’re celebrating the kindness and connection that have defined Delta from the very beginning.”
