Although dogs are not allowed at every national park, the National Park Service still believes in positive reinforcement.
At about 150 national park sites — of the 433 under the NPS umbrella — visitors who bring their dogs along can collect an official BARK Ranger badge, so long as owners and their canine companions vow to abide by a set of four rules:
- (B)ag and carry out your waste
- (A)lways wear a leash
- (R)espect wildlife
- (K)now where you can go
“The main purpose of the [BARK Ranger] program is to make contact with visitors and their pets to help everyone have an enjoyable visit,” the NPS explains. “The goal is to increase awareness of positive pet behaviors and reduce the number of non-compliant dog incidents.”
The badges make for a fun collectible, and meeting with the real park rangers is a playful photo op, but the program underscores the importance of safety and responsibility among visitors.
By teaching the basics of stewardship and respect for wildlife, the parks can be maintained and preserved by all who love them — four-legged or otherwise.
“As an owner, being a BARK Ranger means that you not only enjoy sharing adventures with your dog but also that you want to do it responsibly,” the NPS website states.
“Taking this adventure means you are setting an example for everyone with you, and everyone you meet on your walk.”
